Although stainless steel dominates among thermal mugs, it is worth learning about the advantages and limitations of individual materials. Stainless steel (e.g., grade 304) is not only resistant to mechanical damage, but also neutral in taste—it does not impart a metallic taste to beverages, which can happen with cheaper alloys. An alternative is ceramic mugs with an insulating layer, which better imitate traditional dishes, but usually do not retain heat as well. Plastic models are lighter, but often do not provide a tight seal and heat up quickly. Steel is particularly recommended for drivers – even with intensive use, it does not deform or scratch, which is important when frequently inserting and removing it from the holder.
